57 Avenue Infrastructure Replacement

Dates

Start: May 2026 (estimated)
Completion: September 2026

Timelines may change depending on weather and site conditions.

Location

57 Avenue between Highway 27 and Shannon Drive.

Impact: Significant impact to traffic flow with some lane closures

Why

A collapsing sanitary sewer line requires replacement.

What Is Happening

The Town of Olds will be upgrading 57 Avenue between Highway 27 and Shannon Drive. In addition to replacing the utility services under the road, the Town will also conduct intersection improvements on the north and south sides of Highway 27 at 57 Ave. These intersection improvements are outlined in Alberta Transportation’s Highway 27 Functional Plan.

This work will improve:

  • Underground utilities
  • Road condition
  • Drainage
  • Traffic flow
  • Intersection safety

Construction will take place during the 2026 construction season.

See map below for full limits.

Underground

  • Sanitary sewer work
  • Storm system and catch basin improvements

Surface

  • Road rehabilitation/paving
  • Concrete (curbs, sidewalks, pads)
  • Boulevard restoration

Traffic & Safety

  • Intersection improvements
    • Creating straight and left turning lanes onto and across Highway 27 from 57 Avenue (both north and south)
    • Closure of the north service road access to 57 Avenue (adjacent to Aloha Mobile Home Park).
    • Updated signage and line painting to allow for a dedicated left-turn lane and through lanes along 57 Avenue

Construction is expected to follow these general phases:

  1. Underground utility work
  2. Road and concrete work
  3. Paving and final restoration

Start: May 2026 (estimated)
Completion: September 2026

Timelines may change depending on weather and site conditions.

You can expect:

  • Lane closures
  • Reduced speeds
  • Traffic delays
  • Temporary access changes/road closures

Please allow extra travel time and follow all signage.

During construction, you may notice:

  • Noise, dust, and heavy equipment
  • Temporary driveway or access disruptions
  • Limited street parking
  • Sidewalk detours

We will maintain access as much as possible, but short-term disruptions will occur.

Because this project includes underground work:

  • Temporary water shutoffs may occur (advance notice will be provided)
  • Drainage patterns may temporarily change during construction
  • Catch basins and utilities will be adjusted as work progresses

How much does the project cost?

The estimated cost of the 57 Avenue Improvements project is approximately $1.2 million. This includes underground utility upgrades, roadway improvements, and intersection enhancements.

The project is funded through the Town’s capital budget and planned infrastructure renewal program.

Will I still have access to my property?

Yes, however, temporary disruptions may occur during certain stages.

Will there be water shutoffs?

Possibly. Affected properties will be notified in advance.

Why is this work being done now?

Sanitary and storm infrastructure in the area is failing. We need to replace the aging infrastructure to improve safety and long-term performance.

Will landscaping be restored?

Yes, restoration will be completed at the end of the project (weather dependent).

Why is access to the service road from 57 Avenue being closed?

This change aligns with the Highway 27 Functional Planning Study. The closure is being implemented to improve safety and traffic flow by reducing turning conflicts at the intersection.

This is a permanent closure.

Please stay clear of construction areas and follow all signage.

Work zones may include:

  • Open excavations
  • Heavy equipment
  • Changing traffic patterns

Other Construction Projects

FortisAlberta is excited to announce the Next Generation Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) program. Fortis will install new network equipment and upgrade the electricity meters in our community. As with any technology, upgrades are essential to meet evolving needs and requirements. AMI metering technology is becoming the standard throughout North America with a proven record of increasing sustainability, reliability and being a cost-effective choice for customers.

In the coming weeks, FortisAlberta technicians will begin installing AMI network equipment (gateways, routers, and streetlight controllers) on poles and streetlights owned and operated by FortisAlberta. They will also replace a series of home and business meters in select locations to establish the AMI network.

Following the AMI network equipment installation, FortisAlberta will begin the mass installation of AMI electricity meters for all homes and businesses across our service territory. This process will start in the fall of 2025 and continue through the end of 2029. Most of these meter exchanges will be performed by Olameter Inc., FortisAlberta’s AMI mass meter installation vendor. FortisAlberta will provide additional information on future mass meter installations and timelines three months before work begins in your community.

Approximate Timeline:

  • Network equipment installation: August 4 through September 1, 2025
  • Mass Meter Installation: October 2025 through December 2029

The new AMI meters use radio frequency (RF) waves or cellular communication to transmit data automatically from the installed AMI meters.

If you have further questions or concerns, please contact Fortis Alberta Inc at 310-WIRE (9473) or FortisAlberta.com.

Starting in November 2025, Metercor has started the communication process via letters, phone calls, and emails with residents in Phase 2 of the meter replacement (see yellow dots in above image).

What you need to know about the exchange:

  • Quick and simple – The process typically takes less than an hour and may require a temporary water shutoff.
  • Same location – Your new meter will be installed where your current one is.
  • Clear the area – Please ensure the meter location is accessible for the installer.
  • Certified professionals – A uniformed Metercor representative carrying ID will complete the exchange. Feel free to ask for their ID or call Metercor at 403-280-3070 for verification.
  • Adult presence required – Someone 18 years or older must be home.
