Older Adults, 55+ and Seniors

Older adults make Olds a vibrant place to live, representing nearly 24% of our population. The Community Connection Centre honors the contributions of our 55+ residents by helping them age well in place. By building strong partnerships and hosting engaging programs, we create a network of support that prioritizes connection, friendship, and belonging for everyone.

New Social Prescribing

A holistic approach to health, social prescribing bridges the gap between medical and social care services.

The Community Connection Centre's Social Prescribing Program links the healthcare system to senior-serving organizations in the Town of Olds. This reduces the demand on healthcare professionals and better equips them to support older patients (55+).

In every community, older adults play an important role and make a positive impact on society. They serve as mentors, volunteers and loving family members. After a lifetime of working hard and building communities, they continue to share their wisdom and experience with the next generation.

Older adults deserve a life of independence and dignity.

But this is not a reality for many Albertans. Older adults – especially those who live alone – often lack access to community-based resources needed to complement their medical care. Social supports like food and housing programs help ensure those over 55+ can age in place and avoid the need for higher levels of care.

How does Social Prescribing work?

Step One: Social Prescription

A primary healthcare provider fills out a form to make a social prescription (referral to a Link Worker) or senior self refers by filling out the client referral intake form and submits it by email to the Seniors Community Link Worker.

Step Two: Upon receiving the referral, a Link Worker collaborates with the client to assess their needs and establish personalized health and social goals by leveraging local community resources.
Please note that depending on availability, client may be placed on a waiting list.

Step Three: The older adult accesses community-based supports to improve their health and well- being.

For those seniors who just need some support with finding services in our community or filling in forms, the Community Connection Centre will also host Drop In Services that are available Wednesdays from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM on a first come, first serve basis.

The funding for a portion of this work has been provided by the Waltons Trust.
