Highway 27 Signalization Study
The Highway 27 Operational Review provides an updated review of signalized intersections along the Highway 27 corridor through Olds, from 70 Avenue to Highway 2A. The review was completed to assess traffic signal operations, corridor progression, pedestrian accommodations, intersection safety, and opportunities for cost-effective improvements. The report builds on previous planning work and identifies recommended upgrades that could improve travel flow, support active transportation, and address infrastructure deficiencies along the corridor.
Key items reviewed in the study include:
- Traffic signal timing and coordination along Highway 27
- Travel progression through the corridor for all road users
- Safety performance and collision history
- Pedestrian crossings, ramps, and active transportation connections
- Signal infrastructure condition and potential upgrades
- Access management opportunities
- Railway pre-emption considerations near 50 Avenue
- Intersection-specific improvements at key signalized locations
The report identifies a range of potential improvements, including:
- Updated signal timing for all eight signalized intersections reviewed
- Improved signal coordination between 52 Avenue, 51 Avenue, and 50 Avenue
- Signal infrastructure repairs and upgrades
- Pedestrian facility improvements at signalized intersections
- Pavement marking, signage, and channelization improvements
- Continued monitoring and future planning for longer-term corridor needs
The review is intended to support future planning, coordination, and decision-making with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors. Implementation of the recommended improvements would be subject to future prioritization, funding, and coordination.
