Fall 2025 Lifesaving Swim for Life & Swim Patrol Lessons

Pre-requisite: Ages 6 & up
Building the foundation of swimming skill development beginner swimmers will gain confidence in the water as they learn safe entries into various depths of water, treading water in a lifejacket, opening their eyes underwater, and breath control. Once they have learned their floats, rollover, glides, and kicks from front to back, they will front crawl their way into the next level.
Pre-requisites: Ages 6 & up & successful completion of Swimmer 1
Swimmers will be challenged by the introduction of various skills including flutter kick on their front, back, and side, vertical whip kick with an aid, and swimming front and back crawl for 10m.
Pre-requisites: Ages 6 & up & successful completion of Swimmer 2
Increased time and distance components are incorporated for skills learned such as flutter kick on front and back, whip kick on back, front and back crawl, and interval training.
Pre-requisites: Ages 6 & up & successful completion of Swimmer 3
Swimmers will move from a beginner to intermediate swimming level. Swimmers will work on improving their front crawl, back crawl, and whip kick, and will be introduced to breaststroke.
Pre-requisites: Ages 6 & up & successful completion of Swimmer 4
Technique and endurance will receive greater focus as swimmers will need to complete longer distance swims and interval training sessions for all their strokes.
Pre-requisites: Ages 6 & up & successful completion of Swimmer 5
As the final level in the Swimmer program, swimmers will build up their advanced skill set. Swimmers will work towards mastering stride entries, compact jumps, and lifesaving kicks. They will also refine their strokes to increase their swimming strength, power, and endurance-critical for success in the 300m workout required to complete the level.
Pre-requisites: Successful completion of Swimmer 6
Rookie Patrol lays the foundation of the Swim Patrol program. It includes 4 main components: stroke refinement, fitness, first aid, and lifesaving.
Pre-requisites: Successful completion of Rookie Patrol
Ranger Patrol enhances capability in the water, include stride entry, underwater forward and backward somersaults, lifesaving eggbeater kick and increased fitness levels to meet a 200m timed swim. Rescue skills involve an increased skill level in first aid basics, victim recognition and non-contact rescues. Stroke refinement and underwater proficiency continues to be a focus in Ranger Patrol as it is
critical for supporting swimmer fitness.
Ages 4 - 12 months
Parents and babies will explore the water together under the watchful eyes of their instructor. They will learn how to safely enter and exit the water and work on getting ready to discover the water safely.
Ages 12 - 24 months
Instructors will lead sessions to help parents with children learn basic water safety skills in a welcoming environment. Parents are taught how to support their child with assisted entries and exits into water and
support them in learning to float and kick.
Ages 2 - 3 years
Parents will work towards supporting their toddlers in becoming more independent in the water. Getting in, getting out, going under, and floating, parents and toddlers will be introduced to different iterations of these fundamental skills.
Ages 3 - 5 years
Preschoolers will be assisted by their instructor when learning to enter and exit water safely, jump into chest deep water, and put their faces in the water to blow bubbles. Becoming comfortable with floats and glides and moving safely in shallow water while wearing lifejackets will help them gain confidence with their water skills.
Ages 3 - 5 years
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Preschool 1
Preschoolers will work on becoming more independent with their water skills. Some of these skills include jumping into chest deep water unassisted, submerging and exhaling underwater, and floating and gliding with various buoyant aids.
Ages 3 - 5 years
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Preschool 2
Preschoolers will kick and glide their way through the water on their fronts and backs. They will work on retrieving objects from the bottom in water that is waist deep, and work towards mastering their floats, rollovers, glides, and kicks.
Ages 3 - 5 years
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Preschool 3
Preschoolers will gain some independence in deep water. They will practice jumping into deeper water (including getting out by themselves), sideways entries, and opening their eyes underwater. These swimmers in training will work on completing 5m of front crawl in their lifejackets and work on their ability to tread water.
Ages 3 - 5 years
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Preschool 4
Preschoolers will work towards achieving important swimming milestones. They will work on being able to support themselves treading in deep water for 10 seconds and complete 5m swims with front crawl and back crawl. Wearing a lifejacket, they will practice forward roll entries into deep water, learn to whip kick in a vertical position, and be introduced to interval training.
Fall 2025 Youth Programming and Advanced Leadership Courses
Prerequisite: Must be 11 years or older by the end of the course.
Basic first aid and caregiving skills for youth aged 11-15 years old. Participants learn how to provide care to younger children in a variety of age groups, and how to prevent and respond to emergencies. This course also offers youth the training to promote themselves as a babysitter to prospective parents.
Bring a lunch and snacks and a doll if available.
Cost: $60.00 / person
Prerequisite: Must be 9 years or older by the end of the course.
This course is designed for youth aged 9 to 13 years, in order to provide skills and knowledge to increase their confidence in staying safe on their own within their community. The program offers age-appropriate first aid knowledge and skills to reduce injury to self or others, should an emergency occur.
Cost: $55.00 / person
Prerequisite: Must hold a valid Standard First with level CPR-C.
The Red Cross Intermediate First Aid Course recertification course is designed for individuals who still hold a valid Intermediate First Aid Certificate with level CPR C from the Canadian Red Cross.
Cost: $85.00
Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 50 meters and tread water for 2 minutes. For ages 8-12 years.
The Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) offers serious fun for kids 8 years and up who can swim at least 50m and tread water for 2 minutes. This program is designed to build both lifesaving and swimming skills. JLC provides action-packed fun for kids who love the water and are looking for an extra challenge while working on completing their Swim Patrol levels.

Prerequisite: Swimmer 6 and ages 12-16 years.
The Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) Senior is designed for those wanting to work towards becoming an Aquatic Instructor or Lifeguard. This program offers the option to word towards the required training to move on to National Lifeguard. Candidates will develop and build specialized training in core courses like Bronze Star, Medallion and Cross.
Cost: $175.00 (includes course material)
Prerequisite: Bronze Star or 13 years of age.
Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness - the four components of water rescue, form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on and around the water.

The Adult Swimmer program is for beginners who may be just starting out with their learning to swim journey. Participants set their own goals to develop water confidence. Instructors will adapt the lesson to accommodate the needs of the adult learners and provide flexibility to achieve their personal swimming goals.

The Adult Stroke Improvement course is for swimmers who are looking to finesse their strokes with the help of one of our certified instructors. Instructors will adapt the lessons to accommodate the needs of the adult learners and the flexibility to achieve their personal swimming goals.

For those who need to recertify their Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Award.

The Red Cross Intermediate First Aid with CPR/AED course is a comprehensive course, providing the necessary skills required in the workplace or at home.
The blended course allows participants to complete part 1 through online learning at home. Part 2 will be classroom learning and must be completed within 45 days of registration. After successfully completing both parts, participants will be issued a 3-year certification.

Swimmers will get to work on their Swim to Survive skills and be introduced to interval training.
Pre-requisite: Ages 6 & up & successful completion of Swimmer 2.
Swimmers will make a splash with their kneeling dives and forward roll entries. Swimmers will be challenged with the introduction to more difficult (but fun) skills such as handstands in shallow water and in front somersaults (in water). Increased time and distance components are incorporated for skills learned such as flutter kick on front and back, whip kick on back, front and back crawl, and interval training.
Pre-requisite: Ages 6 & up & successful completion of Swimmer 3.
Swimmers will move from beginner to intermediate swimming level. Swimmers will complete standing dives, tread water for 1 minute, and work towards being able to swim underwater for 5m. Swimmers will achieve the Swim to Survive standard by being able to roll into deep water, tread water for 1 minute, and swim 50m. In addition to improving their front crawl, back crawl, and whip kick, swimmers will be introduced to breaststroke.
Pre-requisite: Ages 6 & up & successful completion of Swimmer 4.
Swimmers will be challenged with a whole new set of skills; shallow dives, tuck jumps (cannonball entries), eggbeater kick, and backward somersaults (in water). Technique and endurance will also receive greater focus as swimmers will need to complete longer distance swims and interval training sessions for all their stroked.
Pre-requisite: Ages 6 & up & successful completion of Swimmer 5.
As the final level in the Swimmer program, swimmers will build up their advanced skill set. Swimmers will work towards mastering stride entries, compact jumps, and lifesaving kicks. Fall 2025 SwimAbilities Lessons
Cost: $59.20 (8 classes, 45 minutes each)
The SwimAbilities program is a multi-leveled program that is geared towards participants aged 3-16 with special needs. The program is designed to break down swimming skills into small, manageable components with logical progressions and lots of opportunities for success. Each class is 45 minutes long with 30 minutes of class time and 15 minutes of transition time for play and getting out of
the pool.
This program is for anyone who needs additional support to develop fundamental physical literacy skills and safety routines for aquatic activities, or participants that need a break from typical swimming lessons. Participants are taught swimming skills, safety routines, and Water Smart education by Lifesaving Society certified SwimAbilities instructors. The SwimAbilities program is designed so that students are able to come in and out of the program as individual needs change.
Note: Each participant is required to have a caregiver or aide in the water with them during the lesson.
Pre-requisite: Ages 3 - 16
Designed to teach participants an introduction to swimming. Skills focus on getting comfortable in the water and basic movement in the water with assistance.
If the child has never taken swimming lessons, and cannot put their face in the water, the child should be registered in SwimAbilities 1.
Pre-requisite: Ages 3 - 16
Designed to build on basic swimming skills that have previously been taught with additional support. This level focuses on doing basic swimming skills independently. Participants work on self-propulsion
in a variety of ways.
If the child can put their face in the water and blow bubbles, and can be held in a front or back position, the child should be registered in SwimAbilities 2.
Pre-requisite: Ages 3 - 16
Designed to build on the basic techniques of swimming. This level focuses on building efficiency, and provides an introduction to deep water.
If the child can independently float on their front AND back (with or without help starting and recovering), the child should be registered in SwimAbilities 3.
Pre-requisite: Ages 3 - 16
Designed to prepare students for independence and safety in an aquatic environment. This level focuses on endurance, distances, and comfort in deep water.
If the child can swim 5 meters on either their front or back, and can perform a rollover in the water unassisted, the child should be registered in SwimAbilities 4.
