2026 Census
The Canadian Government’s 2026 Census of Population is officially underway. While most Canadians will participate this spring, collection has already begun in specific regions.
Key Dates for 2026
- February 2026: Collection began for select northern and remote communities to ensure access before spring travel and weather changes.
- May 2026: The official census month for the rest of Canada. Most households will receive their invitation letters in early May.
- May 12, 2026: This is the anticipated "Census Day," the reference point for most questions (e.g., "Who lived in this household on this date?").
What’s New in the 2026 Questionnaire?
Statistics Canada has introduced several updates to reflect the country's changing social landscape. The most notable changes appear on the long-form questionnaire (sent to 25% of households):
- Sexual Orientation: For the first time, a question on sexual orientation will be included for respondents aged 15 and older.
- General Health: A new question asks Canadians to rate their perceived health status to help plan future healthcare services.
- Homelessness: New questions aim to collect data on people who have experienced homelessness in the past, filling a significant data gap.
- Religion: This question will now be asked every 5 years (instead of every 10) to better track Canada's growing religious diversity.
- Indigenous Languages: The questionnaire has been translated into 15 Indigenous languages to improve accessibility and representation.
Quick Facts
- Participation - Mandatory for all residents of Canada.
- Short-form - Sent to 75% of households (basic demographic information).
