Municipal Mini: Elm Pruning Season is Open Until March 31

Elm pruning season is now open in Alberta.

From October 1 to March 31, elm trees in Alberta can be pruned while elm bark beetles are inactive, helping reduce the risk of spreading Dutch Elm Disease (DED).

Why Pruning Timing Matters

Elm bark beetles can be attracted to the scent of fresh pruning cuts and may carry the fungus that causes DED. Pruning elm trees between April 1 and September 30 increases the risk of attracting these beetles.

If you have an elm tree on your property, keep these tips in mind:

  • Have pruning done by a qualified professional arborist whenever possible.
  • Avoid topping or removing excessive amounts of live wood, which can weaken the tree and shorten its lifespan.
  • Remove and properly dispose of all dead elm wood by March 31.
  • Dead elm wood can be burned, buried or chipped according to applicable requirements.
  • Do not store elm firewood. Storing elm firewood is illegal in Alberta.

There is no cure once an elm becomes infected with DED, but proper pruning, sanitation and monitoring can help prevent its spread.

Help protect Olds' elm trees by pruning during the permitted season and properly disposing of elm wood.
