Employment Opportunity - Supervisor - Parks

Do you enjoy working outdoors and seeing the results of your efforts in the community? Do you love sharing your knowledge and helping a team succeed? Do you get excited about a leadership role where you can still roll up your sleeves and get involved in the work?

The Town of Olds is looking for a Supervisor – Parks to join our Community Services team! In this hands-on leadership role, you'll work alongside your crew to maintain the parks, trails, sports fields, and outdoor recreation facilities our community enjoys. You'll combine your technical expertise with practical leadership to keep these spaces safe, welcoming, and ready for use.

About the Town of Olds
From sports fields and playgrounds to trails and landscaped areas, the Town of Olds' parks and outdoor spaces are an important part of community life, providing places for residents and visitors to stay active, connect, and enjoy the outdoors.

Keeping these spaces safe and welcoming takes year-round planning, hands-on work, and a dedicated team. Our Parks crew works with other Town departments, community organizations, and contractors to maintain outdoor spaces and support recreation throughout the seasons.

Role and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager of Recreation, you'll lead a team of five permanent Parks Operators and seasonal staff while remaining actively involved in daily parks operations. From May through August, the Parks team can grow to around 25 people, making effective communication, coordination, and leadership especially important during the busy summer season. You'll balance hands-on maintenance with crew supervision, seasonal planning, project coordination, and public safety responsibilities.

Your work will include:

  • Leading your team: Assign daily work, coordinate schedules, provide hands-on training and coaching, and offer clear feedback to help employees succeed.
  • Maintaining our outdoor spaces: Work alongside your crew to maintain parks, sports fields, trees, trails, and outdoor facilities. Apply your knowledge of turf management, irrigation, aeration, and pruning while safely operating and maintaining equipment such as ride-on mowers, wide-area mowers, and small tractors. Provide technical guidance to employees on equipment operation and maintenance practices.
  • Planning and coordinating operations: Set seasonal maintenance priorities, organize crews, equipment, and materials, and coordinate approved parks projects and contracted work. Monitor progress, inspect completed work, and address deficiencies to help ensure projects meet Town standards.
  • Keeping people safe: Coordinate inspections of playgrounds, trails, and outdoor amenities, identify and address hazards within your authority, maintain inspection records, and promote safe work practices.
  • Supporting the community: Respond to parks-related inquiries and coordinate with Town departments, contractors, sports organizations, and event organizers to address maintenance needs and prepare outdoor spaces for community use.

Day in the Life
Your day may start with a look at the weather forecast and a conversation with your crew about the work ahead. You'll review priorities, assign tasks, and make sure everyone has the equipment, materials, and information they need to work safely and effectively.

From there, you might head out to help prepare a sports field, address an irrigation problem, inspect a playground, or support seasonal tree and landscape maintenance. You'll be available to answer questions, demonstrate techniques, and help your team work through challenges as they arise.

Not every day goes according to plan. An unexpected maintenance issue, a change in weather, or preparations for an upcoming community event may require you to shift priorities and coordinate with other Town departments or contractors. Between fieldwork and daily operations, you'll coach employees, maintain inspection records, manage work orders using PSD Citywide, adjust schedules, and plan upcoming projects.

As the seasons change, so does your work, from maintaining sports fields and landscaped areas in the warmer months to coordinating snow and ice control on assigned trails, sidewalks, and outdoor facilities during winter.

Who You Are
You're an experienced parks professional who leads with a practical, supportive approach. You communicate clearly, adapt when priorities change, and take pride in helping your team deliver quality work.

To succeed in this role, you'll bring:

  • Experience supervising multiple crews, in year-round parks, grounds maintenance, horticulture, or landscaping operations.
  • A high school diploma and a post-secondary certificate or diploma in horticulture, turf management, landscape horticulture, or a related field, or a recognized Landscape Horticulturist Journeyperson credential.
  • Hands-on knowledge of turf care, horticulture, sports-field maintenance, parks equipment, and outdoor facility maintenance.
  • The ability to organize work, coach employees, communicate clearly, and make sound decisions while balancing competing priorities.
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence and current First Aid/CPR certification.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Municipal parks experience, supervisory training, and a Class 1 or 3 driver's licence with air brake endorsement are considered assets.

Within 12 months of hire, you'll need to complete WHMIS training and obtain Canadian Certified Playground Inspector and Alberta Recreation Facility Personnel – Parks and Sports Field Level II certifications. Alberta pesticide applicator certification is also required within this period if pesticide application is part of your assigned duties.
