Employment Opportunity - Operator 1 -Utilities

As an Operator 1 – Utilities (Water and Wastewater) with the Town of Olds, you’ll help maintain the infrastructure beneath our roads that delivers safe drinking water and keeps wastewater and stormwater systems flowing. Serving a community of just under 10,000 residents, you’ll support the daily operation and maintenance of the Town’s water distribution, wastewater collection and stormwater systems.

This is an entry-level opportunity for someone who is curious, dependable, committed to safe work and ready to learn from experienced utilities operators.

What You Bring

• Grade 12 or high school equivalency.
• A valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence and the ability to maintain it.
• The ability to work outdoors year-round in changing weather and wet or muddy conditions.
• The ability and willingness to complete H2S Alive, Confined Space Entry, Ground Disturbance, Buried Facility Awareness and applicable Alberta Water and Wastewater Operators Association courses.
• First Aid/CPR and a Class 3 driver’s licence with air brake endorsement are assets.
• Previous utilities experience and Alberta Environment and Protected Areas operator certification are assets, not requirements.

What You’ll Do
Your work will vary between scheduled maintenance and urgent response. Working alongside experienced teammates, you’ll help maintain more than 200 kilometres of infrastructure that supports essential services throughout the community.

As you learn the Town’s systems, you will:

• Inspect and maintain water and wastewater pump houses. 
• Flush sanitary and stormwater mains.
• Assist with planned work and emergency repairs involving underground infrastructure. 
• Install, inspect and service water meters.
• Safely operate equipment, including skid steers and front-end loaders.
• Complete required inspections, maintenance records and operational documentation using Microsoft Office programs and PSD Citywide.
• Communicate with residents, contractors, regional partners and employees across Town departments to coordinate work, respond to questions and share relevant utility service information. 

This position has no direct reports. You will work alongside experienced utilities operators and other Town employees to complete scheduled maintenance and respond to urgent service needs.

About Our Utility Systems
The Town of Olds operates Level 2 Water Distribution and Level 2 Wastewater Collection systems regulated by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. The role focuses on maintaining the Town’s local distribution and collection infrastructure. Treated drinking water is supplied through the Mountain View Regional Water Services Commission, while wastewater is transported for treatment through the South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commission.

How You’ll Succeed 
You’ll be successful in this role by completing work safely, following operating and regulatory procedures, maintaining accurate records in Microsoft Office programs and PSD Citywide, communicating professionally with residents and work partners, responding reliably during assigned standby periods, and making steady progress toward the training and certifications required for the position.

Compensation and Work Schedule

• Wage range of $33.14 to $37.50 per hour.
• A regular schedule of 40 hours per week. 
• Regular working hours of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. 
• Participation in a rotational standby schedule approximately one week every six weeks. 
• When on standby, employees must be able to report to the required work location within 30 minutes.
