Employment Opportunity - Human Resources Generalist

As the Human Resources Generalist with the Town of Olds, you’ll help make HR easier for employees and more efficient for the people delivering it.

You’ll be part of a three-person HR team with the Manager of Human Resources and the Payroll and Benefits Coordinator. Your work will touch nearly every part of the employee experience — recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance, benefits, records, payroll support, reporting, and process improvement.

Every day will look a little different. You might help a manager prepare for a performance conversation, coordinate interviews, answer an employee’s HR question, update records in Avanti, and then turn your attention to a process that could work better.

And when you see an opportunity to improve something, you won’t just make a recommendation and move on. You’ll have opportunities to take HR projects from idea to implementation and see how those changes affect your own work, your team, and employees across the organization.

What you’ll do

You’ll work directly with employees, supervisors, managers, and departments across the Town.

That means you’ll:

  • Help people navigate HR questions. You’ll provide practical guidance on policies, attendance, performance, workplace conduct, accommodations, respectful workplace matters, and other day-to-day employee concerns. Most of these conversations happen one-on-one or in small groups, and you’ll know when a more complex issue needs to involve the Manager of Human Resources.
  • Keep recruitment and onboarding moving. You’ll coordinate job postings, screening, interviews, references, offers, onboarding documentation, orientations, and recruitment records while helping managers run fair, consistent, and inclusive hiring processes.
  • Manage the details behind the employee lifecycle. You’ll maintain employee records, process changes, support benefits administration, track attendance and leaves, prepare correspondence, and make sure confidential HR information is accurate and complete.
  • Step into payroll when needed. You’ll act as backup for monthly and biweekly payroll during approved absences. You’ll follow established procedures, deadlines, approval controls, and review requirements, with guidance available as you learn the Town’s payroll processes.
  • Make HR processes better. You’ll help improve forms, workflows, policies, tracking tools, systems, employee communications, reporting, and other HR processes. You may take improvement projects from beginning to end and see the impact firsthand.

You won’t have direct reports, but you will build working relationships with employees and leaders throughout the organization.

Here’s what experience will help you succeed
We’re looking for experience that has prepared you to do this work.

You’ve likely:

  • Helped employees or managers work through HR questions involving performance, attendance, workplace conduct, policy, or other employee lifecycle matters.
  • Coordinated recruitment and onboarding activities where accuracy, communication, documentation, and candidate experience all mattered.
  • Managed confidential employee information and HR administration without losing track of deadlines or details.
  • Worked with HR, payroll, benefits, applicant-tracking, or records-management systems and are comfortable learning how information moves between them.
  • Improved a process, form, workflow, or project from start to finish rather than simply following the same process because “that’s how it has always been done.”

You should also be comfortable using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.

At the Town, you’ll use Avanti for HRIS, payroll, applicant tracking, and HR records, along with SharePoint for broader organizational records management.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field is an asset. A CPHR designation, candidacy, or progress toward a recognized HR designation is also an asset.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and directly related HR experience may be considered.

After six months, you’ll know you’re succeeding when...

You can handle most day-to-day HR administration confidently and confidentially without needing someone to walk you through every step.

You’ve learned the Town’s payroll processes well enough to act as payroll backup with guidance and supervision.
Employees across Town facilities know who you are and are comfortable coming to you with HR questions.

You understand when you can resolve something yourself and when an employee relations, policy, payroll, or other sensitive matter needs to be escalated.

And you’ve started finding ways to make HR work easier — whether that means improving a form, simplifying a process, cleaning up a workflow, or taking ownership of an HR project from beginning to end.

What the work is really like

This is an in-office role. You’ll spend your days moving between conversations and focused work. There will be confidential employee matters, recruitment deadlines, records to maintain, reports to prepare, and interruptions that change what needs your attention first.

Some days will be people-heavy. Others will give you more time to work through a spreadsheet, clean up a process, prepare documentation, or dig into an HR project.

You’ll also travel between Town-owned facilities within Olds to work with employees and leaders where they are. There is no regular travel outside Olds.

What you’ll receive

  • $40.89–$46.27 per hour, based on a 37.5-hour work week
  • Regular working hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
  • Health benefits
  • Participation in the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP)
  • The opportunity to work on HR projects from beginning to end and see the impact of your work across the organization
