Council Highlights for June 8, 2026

Rezoning Approved to Support Future Mixed-Use Development
Council approved a land use amendment for a property in East Olds, changing the zoning from Traditional Neighbourhood District to Mixed Use Node. While no development application has been submitted, the zoning change supports future residential or commercial opportunities consistent with the East Olds Area Redevelopment Plan.
Council Action: Council gave second and third readings to Bylaw 2026-13.
Rural Transit Study Completed
Council received the Rural Transit Feasibility Study, which examined transportation needs within Olds. The study will help inform future discussions about transportation options, service gaps and potential partnerships.
Council Action: Council received the Rural Transit Study presentation for information.
RCMP Report Highlights Community Safety Efforts
Council received the latest RCMP quarterly report. During the reporting period, officers responded to 22 domestic violence-related files, issued 57 traffic enforcement tickets, removed 12 impaired drivers from the road, and investigated 25 theft-related files. The report also highlighted community engagement efforts in schools, neighbourhoods and local events.
Council Action: Council accepted the RCMP quarterly report for information.
Public Hearings Scheduled for Future Land Use Amendments
Council gave first reading to two proposed land use amendments and scheduled future public hearings. The amendments would rezone 4606 48 Street and 4535 51 Avenue to Municipal Reserve.
Council Action: Council gave first reading to Bylaws 2026-19 and 2026-20 and scheduled public hearings for July 13, 2026, at 1:00 PM in Council Chambers.
Privacy and AI Policies Approved
Council approved new policies to support compliance with Alberta's privacy legislation and guide the responsible use of artificial intelligence within the organization. The policies establish expectations for protecting personal information and managing use of artificial intelligence.
Council Action: Council approved Policies 235C and 236C.
Community Grants and Facility Booking Policies Updated
Council approved updates to the Community Grants Policy and Recreation Facility Booking Policy. The changes create clearer application processes, improve transparency, and help ensure community funding and recreation space are allocated fairly and consistently.
Council Action: Council approved Policy 804C Community Grants and Policy 901C Recreation Facility Booking.
Chief Administrative Officer Evaluation Completed
Council completed the annual performance evaluation of Chief Administrative Officer as required under the Municipal Government Act. The evaluation included an independent third-party review and feedback from Council and staff.
Council Action: Council approved the 2025-2026 Chief Administrative Officer performance evaluation.
Economic Development Strategy Approved
Council approved the Town's first Economic Development Strategy, providing a roadmap for growth through 2031. The strategy focuses on:
- Increasing the non-residential tax assessment from 20% to 30%
- Adding 620 housing units
- Growing taxable assessment to $2.5 billion
- Adding 125,000 square feet of commercial space
A “What we Heard” report was also presented to share what was learned from public input on the Strategy.
Council Action: Council approved the Economic Development Strategy 2026-2031.
Support Approved for Seniors Housing Fundraiser
Council approved funding to support the Mountain View Seniors Housing Foundation's 16th Annual Golf Classic. Funds raised through the event help enhance quality of life for seniors through recreational programming, equipment and resident-focused improvements.
Council Action: Council approved a $2,000 sponsorship from Council's general sponsorship budget.
Development Permit Applications Considered
Council considered development permit applications for backyard hens and a short-term rental. These applications were reviewed under the Town's land use regulations and permit requirements.
Council Action: Council approved Development Permits PRMO-2026-0059 and PRMO-2026-0073.
