Council Highlights for July 13, 2026

The following is a summary of key discussions and decisions from the July 13, 2026, Regular Council Meeting. These highlights provide an overview of the items most relevant to residents and are not intended to replace the official meeting minutes: 

Public Hearings Held for Land Use Amendments 

Council held two public hearings for two proposed Land Use Bylaw amendments, providing residents with an opportunity to share their comments before Council considered the proposed rezonings. 

Council Action: Council gave second and third readings of Bylaws 2026-19 and 2026-20. 

Public Process Begins for Another Redevelopment Proposal 

Council gave first reading to a proposed Land Use Bylaw amendment for 5337 49 Avenue. The amendment would rezone the property from Traditional Neighbourhood District to Mixed Use Centre, allowing future commercial, residential or mixed-use redevelopment. No development proposal has been submitted at this time. 

Council Action: Council gave first reading to Bylaw 2026-21 and scheduled a public hearing for August 24, 2026, at 1:00 PM in Council Chambers. 

Council Strategic Plan 2026–2030 

Council considered the Town of Olds Strategic Plan 2026-2030, which establishes the priorities that will guide decision-making over the next four years. The plan focuses on four strategic priorities: Economic Opportunity, Organizational and Infrastructure Stewardship, Community Experience and Quality of Life, and Governance Excellence. 

The Strategic Plan will guide Council's decisions and inform operational priorities, budgets, and major initiatives while helping ensure the Town continues to plan for both current and future community needs. 

Council Action: Council approved the Town of Olds Strategic Plan 2026-2030. 

Five-Year Capital Plan 2027-2031 

Council received the draft 2027-2031 Five-Year Capital Plan, providing an early look at future infrastructure priorities across roads, utilities, parks, recreation facilities, fire services, municipal buildings and fleet. 

The plan identifies approximately $37.1 million in potential capital projects over the next five years. This plan helps Council understand incoming infrastructure needs and plan for major investments before annual budget discussions begin. 

Council Action: Council received the Draft 2027-2031 Five-Year Capital Plan for information. 

Council Supports Student Excellence Awards 

Council approved continued sponsorship of the École Olds High School Student Excellence Awards. The annual $1,000 sponsorship recognizes students achieving the highest academic standing in Grades 9, 11 and 12 and will be funded through the Mountain View Power sponsorship budget

Council Action: Council approved a $1,000 sponsorship for the 2026 École Olds High School Student Excellence Awards.
