Centennial Park Feedback Highlights Community Values And Priorities

The Town of Olds has released the What We Heard Report for the Centennial Park Improvement Plan, outlining what residents value about the planned changes to the park and what they want considered as planning continues.

74 contributions were received from those who participated in the engagement from July 1 to Aug. 19. Of those who responded to the question about the overall direction, 78 per cent selected either “Yes” or “Somewhat/Mostly,” while 20 per cent did not support the proposed direction.

Written feedback showed that respondents value Centennial Park for its green space, recreation opportunities and role as a community gathering place. Practical improvements were also important. Washrooms and outbuildings were the most frequently raised subject when participants were asked what they liked about the proposed direction, followed by seating and gathering spaces.

The feedback also identified areas for further consideration, including recreation opportunities for children and youth, preserving open space and mature trees, and creating spaces that can serve more than one purpose. Cost, long-term value and competing municipal priorities were also recurring considerations.

“We appreciate everyone who took the time to participate and tell us what matters to them about Centennial Park. That input gives Council another important piece of information as we consider what comes next. It helps us understand not only what people would like to see improved, but what they value and want to protect about the park,” said Mayor Dan Daley.

As detailed design moves forward, community feedback will be considered alongside previous engagement, available funding, project scope and technical requirements. The Town will also review both upfront and ongoing costs. The goal is to fund at least 75 per cent of capital costs through non-tax sources, including grants, partnerships, sponsorships, Mountain View Power contributions and community fundraising.

The What We Heard Report includes the complete written comments received through the engagement, allowing residents and Council to review the feedback alongside the Town’s analysis.
