Behind The Numbers: Town Releases 2026 Financial Report

Every year, Council makes decisions about roads, water systems, recreation facilities, taxes and long-term investments. Those decisions don't happen in isolation.

The Town of Olds has released its third annual Financial Report, providing residents with a clear look at the financial picture behind those decisions and the long-term planning that is shaping the community's future.

While the document highlights continued progress, it also provides an honest look at the challenges that remain.

"This isn’t a report that says the work is finished," said Director of Corporate Services, Alvin Allim. "Rather, it explains where we've made progress, where challenges remain and how we're working to address them through thoughtful, long-term planning."

The report also looks ahead. As infrastructure continues to age, the Town faces growing investment needs in roads, underground utilities, recreation facilities, protective services buildings and equipment. The report explains how long-term planning, asset management and responsible financial decisions are helping prepare for those investments.

Highlights from the report include:

  • The Town returned to an annual financial surplus in 2025.
  • Long-term debt was reduced by more than $4.6 million, improving financial flexibility.
  • Investment in water infrastructure continues to reduce water loss and wastewater infiltration.
  • New benchmarking compares Olds with similar Alberta municipalities, providing additional context for taxes, spending and service levels.
  • The report outlines the long-term infrastructure needs the Town is planning for, including roads, utilities, recreation facilities and public safety buildings.

The Financial Report is one of several strategic documents that help guide Council's decision-making alongside the Strategic Plan, Housing Strategy and Economic Development Strategy. Together, they provide a long-term framework for building a financially stable and resilient community.

"Our goal is to help residents understand not only where we are today, but how today's decisions support Olds for years to come," said Mayor Dan Daley. "This report explains the financial realities we face, the progress we've made and the thinking behind many of Council's decisions."

Residents are encouraged to read the report to learn more about the Town's financial position, the investments being made today and the planning that will shape Olds in the years ahead.

The 2026 Financial Report is available on the Plans & Reports page.

Inside the report you'll find:

  • How the Town's finances changed in 2025
  • Where your tax dollars go
  • How Olds compares with similar Alberta communities
  • Why infrastructure renewal is a top priority
  • What financial challenges remain
  • Where the Town is headed over the next several years
