Town of Olds Advances to Phase 2 of Water Meter Replacement Program

Smart meters help residents detect leaks early, improve accuracy, and support long-term water sustainability. 

The Town of Olds is moving into Phase Two of the Water Meter Replacement Program, an important part of the community’s ongoing work to modernize and strengthen water infrastructure. Beginning this fall, approximately 820 more homes and businesses will receive smart water meters, replacing older mechanical models with more accurate and reliable technology. Since 2024, meters in 730 homes in Olds have already been replaced. 

These new water meters provide tangible benefits to residents and the community — offering accurate billing, early leak detection, and real-time data to help households understand and manage their water use. For the Town, these upgrades improve the efficiency of water system maintenance, reduce costs, and support responsible long-term water management. 

“These meters are already making a difference,” said Adrian Pedro, Director of Infrastructure for the Town of Olds. “They help us catch small leaks before they become big problems, ensure residents are billed only for the water they actually use, and give everyone better insight into how water moves through our community. This is a positive, forward-looking step — one that protects both your home and the broader water system we depend on.” 

The Kamstrup meters record and transmit water usage data securely six times per day, reducing the need for manual readings and ensuring a consistent, up-to-date view of water use across the community. All water usage data is stored on secure Town servers. 

Residents in Phase 2 areas will receive information on how to schedule their meter replacement appointments. Participation in the program is mandatory to maintain reliable and accurate service. 

Health and safety are a priority. While there were concerns from some members of the community, extensive research from Health Canada and the World Health Organization confirms that the low radio frequency signals used by these meters are well below accepted safety limits—significantly lower than common household devices such as Wi-Fi routers, garage door openers, and smartphones.
