Here Are Local News Stories Making Headlines From July 22-Aug 20

A new video, released on July 31, highlights the town’s small-town charm, big opportunities, and vibrant quality of life. It’s the first in a series aimed at attracting investment, new residents, and visitors. 

Council: 

The Town of Olds is currently updating both its municipal development plan (MDP) and land use bylaw (LUB) including proposed changes that would reduce the number of land use districts in town from 27 to 13.

Inflow and infiltration (I & I) of water into Olds' sewer and water systems has cost the community $2.4 million per year every year since roughly 2015, but that figure is getting smaller, thanks to efforts to stem those leaks. 

Coun. Heather Ryan expressed disappointment that efforts to encourage riders other than seniors to utilize the bus don't seem to have paid off even though some residents have called for public transit in town 

The Town of Olds has used 65 per cent of its allowable debt as set by the provincial government. 

 Election: 

 Former Town of Olds councillor Mary Anne Overwater is running for a seat on council again, although she’s not sure yet if she’ll run for councillor or mayor. 

Dan Daley says town council experience plus the leadership skills he gained as dean of the School of Trades at Olds College make him the right fit for the job 

Incumbent Town of Olds councillor Wanda Blatz definitely plans to run for a third term on council; she’s just not sure yet if she’ll be running for a councillor or mayor position. 

Community News:  

Donations will be used to build kits for local youth, giving them a confident, healthy start to the school year. 

Several Chamber sponsored events are coming up, including the 9-hole Golf Tournament on August 20th at the Olds Golf Course. 

In September, it’s Business, Beer and Blue Jeans at the Werklund Agriculture and Technology Centre on the 24th. 

The summer wraps up with a Foam Party Finale and BBQ on August 28th at Centennial Park. That event will include a meet and greet with Olds College Broncos athletes and the town mascot, Oliver.

Local Sports: 

Revenue from sports fields took "a bit of a dip" but municipal staff have promoted the fields across Alberta in a bid to increase revenue. 

The Olds Spitfires 13U AA Black team capped off their incredible season by capturing the Baseball Alberta Tier 1 AA provincial championship this past weekend in Leduc and will now represent Alberta at the Western Canadian Minor AA Championships Aug. 15-17 in St. Albert.   

The work involving the east ramp and wall is scheduled for early August. Work on the south ramp is slated to occur at the beginning of September, with completion expected around the end of that month. 

The organization is currently seeking individuals to fill several roles, including game day staff, promotional and event team members, penalty box personnel, and ticket and office support. 

Olds RCMP:  

The Town of Olds says the severity of crime in the community dropped by 20 per cent in 2024, citing new figures from the RCMP based on Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index. 

Olds RCMP are reminding the public that reporting scams helps to protect others. 

Mounties point out that becoming a victim of fraud can be avoided by using a tips including changing your passwords every six months to ensure that they are kept fresh and secure. 

Police urge community members to be suspicious of calls or messages claiming they have won a prize – especially if you are asked to pay a fee to receive it. 

Regional, Provincial & Federal:  

As of August 8th, tow truck operators will be prohibited from approaching within 200 metres of a crash site unless invited by police, emergency responders, or the vehicle owner. Violators could face a $1,000 fine. 

The provincial government announced a land transfer to enable construction of affordable housing in Olds, but it’s too early to say if that will in fact result in an affordable housing project, says the Town of Olds' chief administrative officer (CAO).
