Sportsplex Renewal Plan: Investing in the Future of Our Community Hub

Assessment and Feasibility Study

In 2024 the Town of Olds completed an engineering assessment and feasibility study (www.olds.ca/SportsplexStudy) of the Olds Sportsplex. The results confirm what many already know: this building is an essential part of the community but requires significant upgrades in the coming years worth preserving. With many competing financial priorities across the community, and with construction estimates for a new facility coming in around $60 – $90 million, replacement of the Sportsplex is not a realistic option. Instead, Council and Administration are focused on addressing the highest-priority upgrades to keep the facility in strong working order for the next decade.

Resident Feedback and 10-Year Renewal Plan

Resident feedback from the 2026 Budget Survey indicates the community would prefer to maintain the existing facility rather than invest in a new building. Council and Administration are using this feedback to develop a 10-year capital renewal plan for the facility that will see many substantial projects undertaken.

Immediate Upgrades Underway

So, what does this mean for users and visitors? Work is already underway, including mechanical upgrades completed in July 2025; and starting this September, the exterior ramps will be replaced. While there may be brief disruptions to regular entrances, public access will be maintained throughout construction.

Major Project in 2026: Electrical Overhaul

Looking further ahead, 2026 will bring a significant upgrade: a full electrical system overhaul, as the facility is at its maximum power capacity. To complete this work safely, the Sportsplex will be without power for approximately 6 weeks. This project is planned for next summer, once both ice surfaces have been removed. During this period, the facility will be closed to all activities and events. A firm schedule will be communicated well in advance to all user groups and the wider community.

Looking Ahead: 2027 - 2035

Other improvements planned for the coming years include a roof replacement, dressing room renovations, further mechanical upgrades, and a potential ‘ice slab’ replacement near the end of this 10-year cycle. This repair bill will be several million dollars but will add many years of life to this important facility.

Collaboration for the Future

The Town will also continue focusing on a longer-term plan for the Sportsplex, as the 2024 Condition Assessment provided opinions on a potential facility expansion. And we continue to look at new ideas for facility utilization, specifically with non-prime ice time and summer dry-floor events.
