Employment Opportunity - Operator 1 - Utilities

As an Operator 1 – Utilities with the Town of Olds, you’ll see what most people never do: the infrastructure beneath our roads that delivers safe drinking water and keeps sanitary and stormwater flowing. Serving a population of just under 10,000, you’ll be part of the day-to-day work—supporting water distribution and wastewater collection.

To thrive in this entry-level position, you bring curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn. You’ll need a Grade 12 or high school equivalency and a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence, and you should be comfortable working outdoors in all kinds of conditions—including muddy ones. You’ll also be expected to complete required safety training (H2S Alive, Confined Space Entry, Ground Disturbance, Buried Facility Awareness) and applicable Alberta Water and Wastewater Operators Association courses. If you don’t have these yet, we’ll support you in obtaining them upon hire. Candidates who can demonstrate the ability to obtain and maintain these certifications are encouraged to apply. First Aid/CPR is an asset, and we’ll support you in obtaining it upon hire if needed. A Class 3 driver’s licence with air brakes (Q) is also considered an asset. Prior utilities experience and Alberta Environment and Protected Areas certification are not required, but they are considered assets.

The daily tasks for the utilities crew are varied—some days routine, some days urgent. The team is responsible for maintaining more than 200 kilometres of infrastructure, much of which goes unnoticed until a problem arises. You’ll learn the system alongside experienced teammates, checking and maintaining water and wastewater pump houses, flushing sanitary and stormwater mains, responding to emergency repairs on underground infrastructure, installing and servicing water meters, and operating equipment such as skid steers and front-end loaders.

Utilities work is regulated by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. The Town of Olds operates a Level 2 Water Distribution system and a Level 2 Wastewater Collection system, with water and wastewater treatment managed through regional commissions. Treated drinking water is supplied via the Mountain View Regional Water Services Commission, and wastewater is transported for treatment through the South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commission.

The wage range for this position is $33.14 - $37.50 per hour. Pay is based on a 40-hour work week. This position includes health benefits and participates in the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP). The hours of work are generally 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday with rotational standby shifts required.

Please submit a cover letter and resume by March 9, 2026, at 8:30 am. When applying by email, use the subject line: Operator 1 – Utilities.
