Employment Opportunity - Operator 1 - Utilities

As an Operator 1 – Utilities with the Town of Olds, you will gain firsthand knowledge of the infrastructure beneath our roads, learning how these essential systems sustain our community by delivering safe, high-quality water and effectively managing both sanitary and storm water flow. Serving a population of just under 10,000, you will be involved in all aspects of utility operations, from water distribution to wastewater collection.

The daily tasks for the utilities crew are varied and dynamic. The team is responsible for maintaining more than 200 kilometers of infrastructure, much of which goes unnoticed until a problem arises. Typical duties include monitoring and maintaining water and wastewater pump houses, flushing sanitary and storm sewers, conducting emergency repairs on damaged underground infrastructure, installing water meters, and operating equipment such as skid steers or front-end loaders.

Qualifications:

To excel in this entry-level position, you should possess a willingness to learn and work hard. A Grade 12 or High School Equivalency Diploma is required, along with a Class 5 Alberta Driver’s license. Comfort with working in muddy conditions is essential. In addition, you must be prepared to complete mandatory safety training courses, including H2S Alive, Confined Space Entry, Ground Disturbance, Buried Facility Awareness, and various Alberta Water and Wastewater Operators Association courses. While prior experience in utilities or Alberta Environment and Protected Areas certification is not mandatory, it would be considered an asset.
