Data Centres: AEPA Regulatory Overview for AI Data Centres

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA) is a key approval and regulatory authority for AI data centres in Alberta.

Yesterday, Council received a presentation from Darren Bourget, Regional Assurance Manager in AEPA’s Calgary office, on how the department conducts its review process. He also addressed questions related to water use, emissions, wetlands, and other aspects of AEPA’s role across the application, operation, and end of life phases of gas generation facilities, including those proposed for AI data centres.
