Town and Hospice Society Agree to Transfer Operation of Nu2U Thrift Store

December 15, 2022

Town of Olds and the Olds and District Hospice Society have agreed in principle to transfer the operations of Nu2U Thrift Store to the Society. The details of the transition are being worked on, however this means the store will not be closing.
On December 5, the Town announced its intention to cease operating a thrift store and close Nu2U permanently. The decision to close sparked many in the community to express their strong affection for Nu2U and highlighted the value some residents see in having such a non-profit volunteer run thrift store in Olds.
Having the Hospice take over the thrift store is a fit aligning with the Hospice Society’s efforts with fundraising and volunteer support. As well, Olds Hospice has been the single largest benefactor of Nu2U proceeds receiving over $100,000 in the last decade. The Hospice Society is hoping to continue to offer granting opportunities to other non-profit organizations as revenues allow.
The Olds and District Hospice Society mission to provide quality, compassionate care in a home like setting for those facing death by offering physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual and educational support to individuals, their families and community at the end of life and during bereavement is supported by a dedicated volunteer base and many generous donations. The existing volunteer fundraising efforts of Tree of Remembrance, Memorial Butterfly Release, Hike for Hospice, and individual donations and sponsorship will now be complemented by Nu2U proceeds. “This is exciting for Hospice moving forward, operating Nu2U Thrift Store will expand our volunteer involvement, fundraising, and community support”, says Hospice Executive Director Mary Smith.
The Nu2U Thrift store is a community based volunteer supported program operating a retail store that resells goods donated through donations. The store provides economical household items for sale and is a place for the community to recycle and repurpose household goods diverting usable items from the landfill. Nu2U would not be successful without the generous donations from community members and the team of committed volunteers that run the store.
It takes many talented community members to run a non-profit organization. For more information on the local hospice go to oldshospice.com.
