The Town of Olds is pleased to announce the launch of two new environmental incentive programs aimed at promoting sustainability and eco-conscious practices within our community. The Rain Barrel Rebate Program and the Home Composter Rebate Program are initiatives designed to encourage residents to take proactive steps towards environmental conservation.
Under these programs, Town of Olds residents who purchase rain barrels and home composters on or after April 22, 2024, are eligible to receive a 50% rebate, up to a maximum of $50 per item. By incentivizing the adoption of rainwater collection and home composting practices, the Town aims to reduce water consumption, alleviate strain on municipal infrastructure, and mitigate organic waste sent to landfills.
Commenting on the launch of these programs, Mayor Judy Dahl stated, "The Rain Barrel Rebate Program and the Home Composter Rebate Program exemplify our commitment to fostering a sustainable and resilient community. By empowering residents to embrace environmentally friendly practices, we can collectively make a significant impact on conserving our natural resources and reducing our carbon footprint."
Rainwater collection and home composting offer substantial environmental benefits. Rain barrels allow residents to harness rainwater runoff from roofs, reducing reliance on municipal water supplies for activities such as watering gardens and landscaping. Furthermore, home composting diverts organic waste from landfills, where it would otherwise decompose and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Instead, composting enriches soil health, promotes biodiversity, and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, thereby contributing to a healthier ecosystem.
Residents interested in participating in these rebate programs are encouraged to visit the Town of Olds website for more information, including eligibility criteria and how to receive the rebates. Visit www.olds.ca/wastecollection or www.olds.ca/water-wastewater to learn more.
