Thank You for Participating in the 6th Annual Pick Up Garbage Day (P.U.G. Day)

June 2, 2022

The 6th Annual P.U.G. (Pick Up Garbage Day) was held in Olds on Friday, May 27, 2022. The community clean up event was originally introduced by the Lions Club in 2016 as a “Local Initiative in Olds for Neat Surroundings” (the acronym: L.I.O.N.S.) and over time the project morphed into Lions P.U.G. Day.
The goal of the Olds Lions Club was to have this project grow into an annual event. Not even the pandemic interruption could stop the community from cleaning up the town. “P.U.G. Day looked a little different over the past two years, but the desire and pride to keep it alive was strong, and Lion members were committed to continue leading the charge in organizing a spring cleanup throughout public areas of town”, said Lions member Henry Czarnota.
This project, spear-headed by the Olds Lions, coordinated many partners in town. It is an annual event for all ages, volunteers include individuals, seniors, students, and families. The Lions Club maps out area(s) to cover, then works with the schools and volunteers. The Town of Olds supports P.U.G. Day with crews to pick up the bagged garbage, supplies gloves and garbage bags and provides funds to the Lions Club for advertising and promotion.
Participating in P.U.G. Day is a great way to have a positive environmental impact, build strong connections, and give back to your community—not to mention both the physical and mental benefits of spending time outside! P.U.G. Day encourages residents of all ages to pick up litter and ‘leave the town cleaner than they found it!’. The annual event is held once a year, however the Lions Club and the Town of Olds encourage residents to lead by example, encouraging everyone to use garbage receptacles and pick-up litter when you see it.
The Olds Lions Club has been proudly serving the community of Olds and surrounding district since 1968. Together their mission is to empower volunteers and partners to improve health and well-being, strengthen communities, and support those in need through giving to their community both locally and supporting humanitarian services to those in need around the world.
