On Sunday, September 27, 2020 at approximately 12:59 hrs the Olds Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 5114 46 Avenue, Olds.
Olds Fire personnel arrived to find a working structure fire in a basement suite of a three-story apartment building. Occupants were evacuating the building and there was heavy smoke and fire venting from the south side of the structure. Fire crews initiated suppression activities, quickly knocking down the forward progress of the fire from the exterior windows before entering the structure and eliminating the fire. The fire took 7 apparatus and 18 firefighters approximately 4 hours to contain the incident and secure the structure.
All residents of the building have been displaced due to extensive smoke spread within the building and the total loss of utilities. Town of Olds Emergency Management personnel organized a reception center and temporary lodging at the Pomeroy Inn and Suites for all of the residents.
Didsbury Fire was called for mutual aid to support operations and provide crew relief. AHS EMS provided an ALS ambulance for firefighter and occupant safety.
There were no reported injuries of any occupants or firefighters. The cause of this fire has been determined to be an accidental cooking incident, and no further investigation will be required.
A working local fire alarm system and building safety components were key factors in quick notification of the Fire Department and safe evacuation of all residents.
