Safety Tips During Heavy Rainfall Events

June 14, 2022

The Town of Olds is currently experiencing a heavy downpour of rain. This rain event is pushing water levels up higher than normal. Town crews are closely monitoring low lying areas and water retention ponds for potential flooding, and as a safety precaution, residents and visitors are reminded to stay away from all bodies of water.
Due to the amount of rainfall this storm is producing, the Town is asking residents to reduce their grey water usage until further notice. Grey water applies to water from showers, tubs, washing machines, dishwashers and sinks.
Protect your home from possible basement flooding:
• Keep downspouts, eavestroughs, gutters, and concrete swales clear of debris.
• Position downspouts away from the house and towards the front or rear of your property (at least six feet from foundation).
• Ensure your sump pump is working properly.
• Check for leaks – Check your basement windows for leaks and damage and ensure they are properly sealed.
Keep your eye on neighbourhood catch basins:
Catch basins are the storm sewer grates located on the street, and they are responsible for storm runoff drainage to the storm sewer. If you notice some localized flooding around the basin, please make sure they are not blocked by debris and water is flowing freely.
Please note the Town of Olds is closely monitoring the situation and will keep residents updated further if the situation changes.
