Olds RCMP Warn Public of Jewellery Scam
June 20, 2024 Olds, Alta. - Olds RCMP would like to make the public aware of possible gold scams taking place in the local area.
Suspects have been known to approach people in parking lots, gas stations, or other public locations typically offering “gold jewellery” for sale, that can be given as gifts, or offer to trade for fuel. The jewellery is not genuine and is offered at very low prices. The suspects often say that they have lost their bank card and are unable to access funds to continue their trip and can, on occasion, be aggressive when approaching people when offering the items for sale. Suspects are typically driving newer rental vehicles, possibly domestic model SUV’s or high-end German type vehicles (e.g.: Audi, Mercedes, etc.), and sometimes will have children with them. These suspects may also be involved in the sale of stolen perfumes & colognes.
These types of incidents can be considered fraud or false pretences and are criminal offences. If you are approached by someone trying to sell gold jewellery, avoid getting involved and call your local police right away to report the incident. If possible, please provide any licence plate numbers or any photos of the involved suspects or vehicles to help with the investigation.
