Olds RCMP Investigating a Series of Arsons

September 22, 2020

Olds RCMP and Olds Fire Department are currently investigating two Arsons that occurred overnight on Saturday September 19, 2020 and in the early morning hours of Monday September 21, 2020.
On Saturday evening or in the early morning hours of Sunday, an unknown suspect in the back alley of 55 Avenue, south of 43 Street in Olds attempted to light the back side of a travel trailer on fire. The fire appears to have extinguished on its own, however there was fairly significant damage to the trailer.
On Monday morning, Olds RCMP were dispatched to assist Olds Fire Department to a report of a garbage can on fire in the back alley of Silverthorn Road just east of Shannon Drive. The garbage can was burned to the ground, and resulted in damages to a nearby garden shed.
Olds Fire Department is asking that residents of Olds do not sleep in their travel trailers parked in back alleys overnight to ensure their safety.
RCMP believe these incidents to be linked and may be related to a series of intentional fires set in Olds earlier in 2020. RCMP would like residents in the Town of Olds to check any surveillance footage they may have for the area north of Highway 27 and east of 57 Avenue in the early morning hours on these dates to see if any suspicious person or activity is seen, including any surveillance of back alleys. It is believed the suspect is on foot when these crimes are committed.
RCMP would also like residents to engage in conversation with their families regarding these incidents and report any information they may have to Olds RCMP or Crimestoppers if they wish to remain anonymous.
RCMP are asking residents to be vigilant in reporting suspicious people or activity to RCMP.
These investigations are ongoing.
