Mountain View Power Community Grant Program Awards Funding to Three Local Groups in Fall Intake

January 9, 2024

Olds – Three local community groups recently received funding through the Mountain View Power (MVP) Community Grant Program, financed by designated MVP profits. This fall, the program approved funding for three standout applications that met the program's approval guidelines. The funding recipients were the Olds Curling Club, Mountain View Nordic Ski Club, and the Undercover Elf event by Olds Fashioned Christmas.

Olds Curling Club was awarded $35,000 to purchase interior netting for the ice surface area.  This interior netting allows groups like Olds Minor Baseball, Olds Minor Softball, Olds Minor Lacrosse, Olds Minor Soccer, and community pickle ball clubs to use the curling club floor space in the curling off-season.  This improvement will create opportunities for these groups in the spring when trying to find dry training facilities.

Mountain View Nordic Ski Club received $10,000 to purchase a snow machine for use on cross-country ski trails. This snow machine has the capability needed to do the work involved on cross-country ski trails. The Club’s mandate is to provide the best cross-country skiing opportunities possible for the citizens of Olds and area. This includes instruction by qualified instructors for all ages, access to mindfully prepared ski trails, collaboration with landowners, the Olds Community Learning Campus and Town of Olds. The Mountain View Nordic Ski Club is made up of volunteers who live in Olds and maintain accessible track-set cross-country ski terrain to encourage winter exercise for all ages, abilities, and fitness levels.

Olds Fashioned Christmas received $5,000 to support an inaugural Undercover Elf event. This initiative enables children to visit Santa’s workshop and select a Christmas gift for their parent or caregiver. The annual Olds Fashioned Christmas holiday event is made possible by many community organizations working collaboratively to offer inclusive, accessible, and welcoming experiences to all residents of Olds and the region.

The MVP Community Grant Program serves to provide financial assistance to local initiatives that help enhance and enrich the community. Every six months, this grant program accepts applications from community groups, which are then reviewed for eligibility by local community members on the Mountain View Power Committee. Following their review, the committee makes recommendations to Town Council. These latest funding awards mark the second round of approvals since the program was established in June 2023.  To support this and other important community initiatives, consider becoming a Mountain View Power customer and see how you can support your community while saving money on competitive energy rates for your home, business, or farm.

Community groups can apply for the next community grant application intake in the spring.  For more information about MVP Community Grants, visit www.olds.ca/mvp.
