Mayor Michael Muzychka's video address announces financial relief from the Town of Olds for those affected by the COVID-19 crisis. A transcript of his address follows.
"Good Afternoon Olds – Mayor Muzychka here….
We understand the COVID-19 pandemic is causing financial challenges for many in our community and Administration and Council have discussed the need to provide some financial relief.
Following our April 2, 2020 meeting of Council, the Town of Olds will be taking immediate action to allow residents more time to pay their taxes and utility bills.
How is this going to work?
For Utility Bills - The Town will continue to bill utility services as normal. However, to best serve customers in these extraordinary times a 90-day deferral of payments has been implemented. This means that Town Utility bills will continue to be sent out monthly, but no penalties will incur.
Penalties will not be applied until July 2, 2020.
Also, please note that during this 90-day period amounts will not be transferred to taxes, not will any utilities be shut off to any residence.
Deferring payments for 90 days will leave residents with a large amount owing. To help minimize the effect Town staff are recommending up to a six (6) month payback period for residents to make their current bill payments along with the deferred amount over the six (6) month period proceeding the 90 day deferral period.
Residents are encouraged to call into the Town Office to request this deferral.
To offer property tax assistance to citizens experiencing the effects of the economic impact due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town has extended the 2020 Property Tax deadline to August 31, 2020.
This means any (past due) arrears penalties will still be applied throughout this period, but no current penalties will incur until September 1, 2020.
No penalties will incur on accounts receivable until July 2, 2020
Please remember, a deferral is a delay of payment, not a forgiveness and anyone who can continue to make their monthly payments as usual should do so.
If you have any questions or wish to defer your payments, please call the Town office at 403.556.6981.
Stay safe – stay diligent and follow all the COVID-19 guidelines. We will get through this!"
