The Town of Olds is looking for a full-time Operator I – Parks to join our Parks team. In this role, you help maintain the parks, sports fields, trails, cemetery, green spaces, playgrounds, dog park, outdoor amenities, and landscaped areas that residents and visitors use every day.
This is steady, physical, outdoor work with visible community impact that changes with the seasons. Summer duties include mowing, trimming, landscape maintenance, sports field maintenance, and caring for parks and green spaces. Winter duties include sidewalk and trail snow and ice control, outdoor rink maintenance, and seasonal cleanup. Year-round responsibilities include inspecting and maintaining park amenities, playgrounds, vehicles, equipment, and tools, providing support for community and special events, completing routine maintenance and inspections, and participating in rotational standby, call-out, evening, weekend, and statutory holiday shifts as required.
A successful week in this role means public spaces are clean, safe, accessible, and ready for use. Trails, sidewalks, and pathways are maintained during winter weather events. Hazards, park and greenspace concerns, equipment issues, and repair needs are identified and reported dealt with. Work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard, and positive working relationships are maintained with coworkers and the community.
You will use parks and grounds maintenance equipment such as mowers, tractors, trimmers, chainsaws, pruning saws, snowblowers, skid-steers, front-end loaders, and related equipment where trained and authorized. You will clean and check equipment, complete routine maintenance such as refuelling, oil checks, lubrication, and blade changes, and report defects or repair needs to the supervisor.
This position does not formally supervise staff. This position works independently, as part of a crew, and is expected to contribute positively to team operations. During the summer season, you may assist with onboarding, training, and providing day-to-day guidance to seasonal staff while working in the field. Complex or sensitive concerns are referred to a supervisor.
What you bring:
- Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with an acceptable driver’s abstract.
- Valid Intermediate First Aid and CPR/AED Level C.
- One year of related parks, grounds maintenance, landscaping, turf maintenance, cemetery maintenance, or equipment operation experience is preferred.
- Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work, including lifting up to fifty pounds repeatedly and working in heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and icy conditions.
- Alberta Recreation Facility Personnel Parks and Sport Fields Operator Level 1 is an asset.
- Air Brake (Q) Endorsement is considered an asset.

The wage range for this position is $29.72 to $33.63 per hour, based on a 40-hour work week. This position includes health benefits and participation in the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP). Rotational standby, call-out, evening, weekend, and statutory holiday shifts will be required based on operational needs.
