Mountain View Power Invests in the Community

May 24, 2023

The Town of Olds is pleased to announce the first three recipients of our Mountain View Power Community Grant: Olds Legion, BGC of Olds and Uptowne Olds.

Olds Legion: $30,000 for a roof repair.
The Legion is a hub for the Olds and area community, hosting many community events.  It is homebase to some key service clubs including Kiwanis, Lions, Air Cadets, and Special Olympics. The Legion also supports veterans and many important causes in our town.

The building is being re-roofed for a more sound public facility that will continue to serve the community for many years to come.

BGC:     $30,000 to construct additional childcare spaces and support renovations to allocated Youth Centre space.

BGC provides safe supportive places where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life.

BGC Olds is an essential organization in our community for child, youth and family programming - additional childcare spaces are well used and consistently identified as a much-needed resource by citizens of Olds. This money will support continuing development and renovations of the Youth Centre.

Uptowne Olds:      $12,000 toward beautification and safety initiatives in Uptowne.

The objective of Uptowne Olds is to promote the Uptowne as the preferred place to live, work and shop.  Uptowne Olds has created a vibrant community of businesses and events that attract many visitors to our town.

The beautification project is for purchase and installation of LED lights that will be wrapped around 50% of streetlights on 50th Ave from Highway 27 to Centennial Park. The safety initiatives include a speed reduction and the introduction of angle parking.
What is the Community Grant Program and how is it funded?

In May 2023, Council passed its Community Grants Policy (PDF), which has the broad mandate of enhancing and enriching the Olds community. This is accomplished by providing operating and capital grants to local community organizations. These grants enhance the abilities of groups to provide services, maintain facilities, and explore new initiatives for our community.

This is funded 100% via revenue from Mountain View Power.

What is Mountain View Power?
Mountain View Power (MVP) is an energy marketer that sells natural gas and electricity to homes and business in Olds and surrounding areas on behalf of UtilityNET, a Calgary based energy retailer.

Founded by the Olds Institute for Regional and Economic Development in 2015 to raise funds for community initiatives, MVP is owned by the residents of the Town of Olds and is a competitively priced alternative to the incumbent energy retailers. Even better - all generated profits are returned to the community.

Support your community by becoming an MVP customer. Learn more at www.mountainviewpower.com or by phoning 1-877-403-0259.

How can my organization apply?

The next funding cycle is anticipated for October 2023. Details on eligibility and the governing documents will be available soon.
