Council Highlights - January 8, 2024
Council Ad Hoc Committee Review Update: Council previously formed an ad hoc committee to assess the current Policies and Priorities Committee's functionality. The ad hoc committee presented a draft Committee of the Whole bylaw, which aims to replace the existing Policies and Priorities Committee bylaw. The new bylaw clarifies the purpose of the meetings and the types of issues to be addressed.
After a detailed discussion about the proposed bylaw, the Council instructed the ad hoc committee to refine the bylaw further and present a revised version of the Committee of the Whole Bylaw at the next regular Council meeting.
Bylaw 2024-04 Traffic Bylaw: Administration presented a new Traffic Bylaw as a replacement of the current Traffic Bylaw. Although the proposed bylaw does not contain any significant changes, its purpose is to make it easier for residents to navigate through the bylaw.
Council passed the first reading of Bylaw 2024-04. Administration will present the bylaw with changes at a future meeting for Council’s consideration of second and third readings.
Kiwanis Music Festival Sponsorship Request: The Town of Olds received a letter of request from the Olds & District Kiwanis Music Festival Society. They requested a donation for its Festival of the Performing Arts, which is scheduled to take place from March 20 to 28, 2024. Council approved a donation of $1,200 for the event.
Olds College Sponsorship Request: Council approved the sponsorship of $5,000 for the 2024 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Men’s Volleyball Championship to be held at Olds College on February 21 – 24, 2024.
Citizen Committee on Council Remuneration: Administration presented a report on the Council Remuneration Review Committee. Every third year of each election term, Council appoints a committee comprising only of members of the public at large. The committee is tasked with reviewing and recommending the compensation of Council members. Administration informed Council that the advertisement for public members to join the committee will begin in the upcoming weeks, and the recommendations for committee appointments will follow.
