Council Highlights March 10, 2025
Below is an overview of Council discussions and decisions from the Regular Council meeting on March 10, 2025:
DELEGATION: Member of Parliament, Honourable Earl Dreeshen
Hon. MP Earl Dreeshen will not seek re-election but will continue serving Red Deer—Mountain View until the next federal election. With boundary changes, Olds moves to the new Ponoka—Didsbury riding, where the Conservative nomination remains open, while Burton Bailey is nominated for Red Deer—Mountain View. MP Dreeshen thanked constituents for their support, and Council recognized his dedication and contributions. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in the Ponoka—Didsbury nomination process.
Council Action: Council expressed gratitude to MP Dreeshen for his years of service and extended best wishes for his future endeavors.
Infrastructure & Planning Quarterly Report
Utilities completed 206 work orders, repaired four water leaks, and continued investigating potential issues. Hydrant testing is set for May, with updates on pump house meters coming soon.
Public Works completed 247 work orders while also addressing potholes and water mains. Sidewalk and asphalt assessments continue, with repairs planned for spring 2025. The Report a Problem program received 61 submissions, mostly about drainage and road issues. Seasonal maintenance is underway, with street sweeping scheduled for April, weather permitting. Updates to Kick it to the Curb and Pop-Up Transfer programs are coming soon.
Planning noted that with permit applications rising and 2025 potentially seeing another year of record development. And that despite Christmas holidays delaying some permit approvals, processing times continue to improve.
Council Action: The Q4 Infrastructure Services Quarterly Report was accepted for information.
Town of Olds Asset Management Program Review
Stronger asset management ensures safer roads, reliable utilities, and smarter spending. New policies are being developed, an asset audit is underway, and data is being integrated into the CityWide program and GIS systems. Early improvements include faster issue response and better reporting. While the process is extensive, completion is expected by year-end.
Council Action: The Asset Management Presentation was accepted for information.
Communications Marketing Plan
Olds blends small-town charm with modern opportunities. The Marketing Plan highlights its central location, college-town identity, arts and culture, and strong community spirit to attract new residents, visitors, and businesses. Video content and outreach will enhance the town’s image, supported by a $15,000 budget.
Council Action: The Communication Marketing Plan was accepted for information.
Town of Olds Municipal Policing Priorities 2025-2026
In response to the Olds RCMP detachment request, Council has set key policing priorities; Crime Reduction (Property Crimes), Community Engagement, Mental Health and Violence in Relationships, and to Promote Road Safety.
Council Action: The 2025/2026 policing priorities have been approved.
Council and Council Committee Meeting Procedural Bylaw 2025-03
Bylaw 2025-03 sets the rules for how Town of Olds Council and committee meetings are conducted.
Council Action: Council gave all three readings and passed Procedural Bylaw 2025-03 as presented.
Chief Administrative Officer Report
Report a Problem submissions are higher than usual due to drainage issues from melting snow, which should resolve with weather changes and ongoing Public Works efforts.
Mountain View Valley Kids has expressed interest in joining the former fire hall redevelopment alongside the Mountain View Food Bank and Community Lending Shelf. While still in early discussions, this presents an exciting opportunity to expand community support.
Council Action: The CAO Report was accepted for information.
