Snowfall Maintenance

Our Public Works staff work hard year round to ensure that roadways and alleys are maintained and kept accessible to all residents at all times of the year. Emergency routes, main collectors and school routes take priority over other areas. During periods of heavy snowfall or other extreme weather conditions, please have patience as maintenance crews work to get to your area as quickly as possible. Predicting the amount of snowfall over the winter (especially in Alberta) is a difficult thing to do - the Town of Olds is committed to maintaining a balanced budget, and to providing cost-effective, efficient service. Your cooperation and patience regarding snow removal is encouraged and much appreciated by the Town and your fellow citizens.

Your Responsibility as a Resident
The Unsightly Premises & Snow Removal Bylaw states that "an owner shall ensure the removal from any improved public sidewalk located adjacent to the Premise, including private driveway crossings, all snow and ice deposited, whether from natural or unnatural means, within 24 hours of deposit."

Our Municipal Enforcement Officers actively enforce this bylaw on a pro-active basis, not waiting for complaints. In cases of residential property, the responsibility falls on the occupant. However, if the occupant does not comply with the bylaw, the property owner is ultimately responsible. Warning Notices are usually issued first. In cases where a warning notice goes unheeded, the Town of Olds will arrange for the sidewalk to be cleaned at the owner’s expense. No more than one warning notice will be issued per premises over the winter season. For safety’s sake, please fulfill your legal responsibility of keeping your sidewalks clean.

For information on local organizations and volunteers willing to assist with snow / ice removal, please contact Operational Services.
