Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Olds Aquatic Centre on Wednesday 22 April for our Earth Day 2009 Solar Showcase! Our goal this year was to create awareness of Earth Day and to educate the public about solar energy, "going green", and to showcase the Town of Olds as a sustainable community. Why did we host a Solar Showcase in Olds? The Alberta Solar Municipal Showcase is an exciting renewable energy demonstration project involving 20 municipal organizations across the province.

The Olds Aquatic Centre was thrilled to unveil its brand-new grid-connected PhotoVoltaic (PV or solar electric) system.

Ten Acts of Green
The Olds Aquatic Centre teamed up with local schools and community groups on a special Earth Day project. Participating Deer Meadow School students each committed 10 "Acts of Green" - students were given ballots on which to record their personal 10 Acts of Green. The ballots were entered into a draw, and the lucky winner was Cassidy Dundas, who officially "flicked the switch" to start up the new PV solar project on the roof of the Aquatic Centre! So what are "Acts of Green"? Click on the following links to find out!

Great Response to Mug Drive
Thanks very much to everyone who donated mugs for the Olds Aquatic Centre's "Mug Drive"! We had an overwhelming response. The mugs were used during the Trade Show on Earth Day, and are now available to other community groups for use during their special events.

Did you know ... sixty-six 15-watt compact fluorescent light bulbs shining for an hour will use one kilowatt hour of electricity?

Did you know … nearly 70% of Alberta’s electricity is produced by coal-burning power plants?

Did you know … a one-kilowatt solar PV system can provide up to 20% of a typical home's annual electricity needs?

Did you know … every 60 seconds, enough light from the sun reaches the earth to meet the world's energy demands for a whole year?
